My name is Amr.
A fascination with complexity, Arabic calligraphy, and the quiet found in making things led me to the Square Kufic script.
Looking for a moment away from the noise of everyday life, I started playing with its letters. I quickly learned that every letter has its own character. Some fall easily into place; others demand theirs. Some seem almost determined to negotiate.
What the letters carry matters too. Love, spirituality, humanity and our relationship with the world around us often find their way into the work.
Soon, designing became less about arranging letters and more about discovering where they wanted to go. Sometimes the process flows; sometimes it becomes a negotiation between meaning, form and the limits of the grid.
And then, slowly, something begins to settle.
Sukoon
In Arabic, sukoon describes a state of stillness — of something being at rest. It is also the name of the small symbol ْ that marks the absence of a vowel: a moment where the voice comes to a stop.
That sense of stillness is at the heart of Sukoon.
Colour has its own role in that process. Sometimes it brings calm, sometimes contrast, and sometimes it gives a composition an entirely different character.
The designs explore how complexity and calm can exist side by side. Square Kufic can appear intricate at first; letters turn into shapes, words into patterns, and meaning may not reveal itself immediately. Perhaps it doesn’t have to.
Like something you come to know over time, a piece can become more familiar with every encounter. There is always something more to notice. By giving complexity time and space, its beauty begins to reveal itself.
